Murdered officer, suspected dead in shots near the headquarters of the CDC, Campus of the University of Emory

A police officer was killed after the authorities said an active shooter opened fire near the headquarters of the Disease Control and Prevention Centers (CDC) and the Atlanta campus of the University of Emory on Friday afternoon.

A Dekalb County Police officer, who officials have not yet identified, was taken to a local hospital after the shooting, where he was critical and then declared dead, officials said at a press conference on Friday night.

Lorraine Cochran-Johnson, CEO of Dekalb County, said it was a “dark day” for the county. The officer leaves behind a wife, who is pregnant and two children, he said.

The Atlanta Police Department said the suspect in the shooting was found dead by a gunshot wound, which may have been self -inflicted. No civilian was shot in the incident, police said.

Atlanta police chief Darin Schierbaum said during a previous press conference that the suspect shot multiple rounds in the CDC building, breaking windows.

There were 92 children in a nursery center on the CDC campus at that time, which were unharmed, police added.

The shots were informed at 4:50 pm

Responding to the Dekalb County Police officers located the suspect on the second floor of the CVS Emory Point pharmacy on the other side of the street from the CDC building and tried to involve the person when girlfriends were exchanged, police said.

Four other people were transported to a hospital in the area for reasons related to stress and anxiety, said the police chief.

Shortly after the shooting was reported, a refuge order was established in the place on the Campus of the University of Emory and then rose. “Run. Hide. Fight. Avoid the area,” said the university on an alert on Friday afternoon.

The director of the CDC, Dr. Susan Monarch, shared a statement about X on Friday night, saying that she and the agency as a whole are “disconsolate by today’s attack on our Roybal Campus, which is still locked as the authorities investigate the shooting.”

“Our main priority is the safety and well -being of all in the CDCs,” Monarch continued. “We are actively coordinating with federal, state and local partners to completely investigate the shooter and this tragic crime.”

The governor of Georgia, Brian Kemp, issued a statement about X thanking the first to respond “towards the danger of submitting the shooter and saving lives.”

“We ask him to join us to hold them in our prayers, along with those damaged tonight near the center of the CDC,” Kemp wrote.

The FBI Atlanta and the Georgia Research Office are investigating the incident.

Georgia’s attorney general Chris Carr, issued a statement on Friday, saying: “We are horrified by the news of the University of Emory and pray for the security of the entire community of the campus.”

The White House was monitoring the situation, an official told ABC News.
